How many books did you read last year? If your answer is more than one, congratulations: you’re more well-read than about 25% of Americans over age 16, according to a 2012 Pew Internet survey. Ironically, as we become more surrounded by words in the digital age, less of us are finding time to actually read them. The good news is that your smartphone or tablet can help.
Trying to stray from the obvious reading apps, like e-readers, we’ve gathered eight excellent apps that’ll help you improve your reading ability and become a better literary citizen, while simultaneously boosting your brain function. Whether you’d like to read more, faster or some combination of the two, these apps will light your path to wisdom.
1. Instapaper
Similar to apps like Pocket, Instapaper allows you to save and download web text for offline consumption. The app reformats the text you give it, giving it a cleaner, easier-to-read lay out and allowing you to focus on the important part: the words.
2. Syllable
Try reading this paragraph while repeating the ABC’s out loud. You’ll find that you’re reading much faster than normal. This is because you’re suppressing your natural subvocalization, or the internal repetition of words you’re currently reading. In short, Syllable helps you learn to speed read. wikiHow is a collaborative effort by knowledge philanthropists who have created the world’s most helpful how-to guides. A goldmine of easily understood articles and videos for free.
I stumbled onto this site because I had a craving for a baked potato but didn’t have the time to make it. I had always baked my baked potatoes but never used the quicker microwave method. I googled my dilemma and wikHow appeared.
A quick, concise article and five video clips showed me how to be an expert at nuking the spuds in a flash. And it tasted quite delicious–rubbing olive oil into the skin was a stupendous suggestion. While I ate, I went back to the site and marveled at the treasure trove of how-to guides contained there. I highly recommend checking out wikiHow and I’ll let the knowledge philanthropists tell ya all about the place…

They can be pedantic at times-some of their segments are as dense as a dissertation—but it’s better to be critical and informative than beer-bellied, redundant, Bayless-like, and dependent on the adjectives “good” and “great.”

Listening to the guys making hilariously arcane observations about sports and related events around the world is like getting a Masters Degree in Smart and Funny Sportstalk. Leave it to Jerry Seinfeld to create something fresh and funny about three things you don’t normally think of together. His Internet show, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, is a well-deserved hit, and the second season features such luminaries as Sarah Silverman, David Letterman, and Don Rickles.
Each short episode is a lighthearted attempt to answer a serious question: what makes something funny?

In the new season premiere, Seinfeld takes Sarah Silverman out for a ride in a Jaguar XKE convertible. Each comedian gets paired with a car that matches their persona. So Silverman gets a sleek and sexy Jaguar, while comedy legends Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner got a silver Rolls Royce for their episode last year. In an upcoming episode, Seinfeld and David Letterman cruise the streets of Connecticut in a Volvo station wagon suped-up with a new engine by the great Paul Newman.
So why is Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee so popular? I think it is because there is a difference between watching a stand-up comedy act and watching innately funny people be themselves. Sure, the former is a crafted experience designed to make you laugh your ass off, but the humour presented in a naturally witty conversation always has that extra something due to the spontaneity of it. John Gatins was the screenwriter for Flight. The movie received two Oscar nominations including best original script, best actor for Denzel Washington, and it was directed byRobert Zemeckis.
Flight tells the redemption story of “Whip” (Washington), a commercial airline pilot who pulls off a heroic feat of flying in a damaged plane, saving 98 lives on a flight carrying 106 people.
While the world begs to embrace him as a true American Hero, the everyman struggles with this label as he is forced to hold up to the scrutiny of an investigation that brings into question his behavior the night before the doomed flight.

About The Film
On a mid-Autumn morning, SouthJet 227 departs Orlando, Florida for what should be a routine trip. Captain Whip Whitaker is at the helm of the Jackson-Ridgefield 88 Passenger Jet along with his young clean-cut co-pilot and first officer Ken Evans, who is Whip’s polar opposite in every way. The flight soon encounters heavier-than-anticipated turbulence as they fly into a massive storm. Not a problem for Whip who steers the plane into the clearing, albeit in an unconventional and eyebrow raising way, to the relief of the flight’s 96 passengers and six members of the flight crew.
